Josh and I started The Linux Podcast shortly after starting Ubuntu Podcast, but we would never find the time to do them. If you have ever watched the Ubuntu Podcast, we have complained plenty about video editing and all that.

While I know Linux and FOSS supporters will hate this, but I think I’ll stick with Flash for now. I’m going to skip the recording with the camera, transferring, editing, uploading, etc, etc. I’m just going to record directly to YouTube and slap it on thelinuxpodcast.com. Frankly, the less work that I have to do to put it out, the more likely I will put shows.

If you can’t see the embedded flash, visit thelinuxpodcast.com.

With Firefox 3.5 out, I decided to give the much discussed video codecs a try. Ubuntu Podcast #30 is a bit over 50 minutes long, at 640×360. The original video file is over 500 MB. Using ffmpeg2theora, the OGV is around 180 MB. Not bad.

The fallbacks seems to work ok. IE visitors see the embedded flash player, Safari users can watch the video with Quicktime.

Playback on a 1.6 ghz machine with 1.5 GB RAM seems a bit choppy at times, but not completely horrible.

Let me know what you guys think.

After about taking a month off, the Ubuntu Podcast is returning. We decided to kick it off with a quickie. Some things I talk about this episode: One Hundred Paper Cuts, Ubuntu Global Jam, Empathy to replace Pidgin, no more Mibbit on Freenode, new Hall of Famer: Adi Roiban, and Ubuntu Satanic license issue.

Sometime next week, we will put out a montage of SouthEast LinuxFest and a short interview with Dan Chen discussing PulseAudio.
