In Ubuntu Podcast #31, we hash over: 8.04.3 released, 6.06 LTS Dapper desktop support, Art of Community Chapter 1 released, French release party, Powernap for servers, test drive Ubuntu on a Mac, maybe bug #1 will be closed soon, and Community Council elections

In Ubuntu Podcast Quickie #9: 8.04.03 coming 16 July, Ubuntu 6.06 desktop support ending, Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase deadline approaching, updates on Spread Ubuntu, UbuCon Central America, 100 Paper Cuts Round 2.
Have to admit, really like OGV in the browser.
Join us for Ubuntu Podcast live streaming #31: Thursday 16 July 8:30pm EST/17 July 00:30 UTC @ http://ubuntupodcast.net/live-stream/.

With Firefox 3.5 out, I decided to give the much discussed video codecs a try. Ubuntu Podcast #30 is a bit over 50 minutes long, at 640×360. The original video file is over 500 MB. Using ffmpeg2theora, the OGV is around 180 MB. Not bad.
The fallbacks seems to work ok. IE visitors see the embedded flash player, Safari users can watch the video with Quicktime.
Playback on a 1.6 ghz machine with 1.5 GB RAM seems a bit choppy at times, but not completely horrible.
Let me know what you guys think.
Just in case you missed it, the plenary videos from UDS are now up: http://video.ubuntu.com/uds/karmic/
To coincide with Software Freedom Day, Atlanta Linux Fest 2009 will be held on Saturday, September 19th 2009!
We have lots of exciting talks lined up this year! Paul Frields and David Nalley will be showing off the Fedora community, lots of Ubuntu representation, with Rick Clark (Server Team manager), Pete Graner (Kernel Team manager), Ken Vandine discussing the desktop, Richard Johnson covering KDE/Kubuntu, John Pugh doing virtualization, and Daniel Chen will be giving his vaunted PulseAudio talk.
Sure its called Atlanta Linux Fest, but we want to spread the love to all open source projects. Roger Wickes is a certified Blender trainer and will be talking…well, Blender; Tarus Balog, CEO of openNMS will discuss running an open source business; Josh Sweeney on the cool stuff you can do with SugarCRM; multi-site Drupal Management by Michael Haynes and David Tomaschik; Mark Hinkle on Zenoss; also, Michelle and Michael Hall will present our favorite distro for children, Qimo 4 Kids. Last but not least, Rikki Kite will present “Her PR Problem — Tooting the Horns of Women in Open Source.”
Registration for Atlanta Linux Fest 2009 is free (but required if you want to use the wifi!).

Congrats to Dan and Smita from the Florida LoCo on their first baby, Ishaan!

After about taking a month off, the Ubuntu Podcast is returning. We decided to kick it off with a quickie. Some things I talk about this episode: One Hundred Paper Cuts, Ubuntu Global Jam, Empathy to replace Pidgin, no more Mibbit on Freenode, new Hall of Famer: Adi Roiban, and Ubuntu Satanic license issue.
Sometime next week, we will put out a montage of SouthEast LinuxFest and a short interview with Dan Chen discussing PulseAudio.
Mibbit has been a pretty popular way of getting on IRC networks, like Freenode, where Ubuntu related channels are located. The Ubuntu Georgia US site had a link to use Mibbit to join the LoCo channel and the Ubuntu Podcast live stream page had it embedded.
Oh yeah, Mibbit gets abused quite a bit too.
As JonathanD blogged, Mibbit is no longer allowed on Freenode. Unfortunately, Mibbit might be the default IRC handler in upcoming releases of Firefox. Either way, you can use and embed http://webchat.freenode.net if you need web irc access.
Still, these tools are important to get people to participate in the community. For the upcoming Ubuntu Open Week, individuals will be able to click on a link and have webchat.freenode.net loaded up in a new tab with #ubuntu-classroom-chat (where participants can ask questions) and #ubuntu-classroom (where the sessions will be run).

Live streaming from the Ubuntu Podcast booth at Southeast Linuxfest. Great turnout. We are hoping to do some interviews later today.
